"Decendants of Richard Gardner of Woburn"

After a series of interesting events in an interesting moment of my life, I was handed (along with a lot of other family history documents & stuff) a simple-looking record book that was "just found" in a relative's closet one day. It was written sometime after January 1889. The entire record is handwritten in a unique print that is beautiful and unique and so, so odd and actually kinda mysterious-looking if you ask me.

The record contains a genealogy that spans 262 years in one branch of my maternal bloodline...or said another way, that's seven generations of just one branch of my enormous family tree...the record stops with the birth of my Maternal 2nd Great-Grandmother. {the record has 7 generations; the genealogy in this blog has 12 generations...13 if you're including the "Old Planter"...I'm in the fourth generation after the last entry in this record...there are two more generations beyond me}

I don't know who wrote this genealogy or when it was written or where it came from. If this account is correct, then it is a piece of our Nation's history as this family was among the first settlers of Massachusetts Bay Colony, which was founded by Puritan refugees from England. It is an account of the "Decendants of Richard Gardner of Woburn, Mass. of the Name of Gardner". {"descendants"is spelled "decendants"...the italicized entries in this blog have not been edited and are entered as they are written in the record}

A slip of paper is inside the record book and on it is written, "Interpretation of Coat of Arms as written on the picture". {I have not seen a picture related to this record...at first glance the handwriting seem identical, but there are some variations}

The note continues, "He beareth sable, a chevron ermine between two griffins' heads erased in chief and a cross forme in base, or by the name of Gardner and was the bearing of Richard Gardner, D. D. and canon of Christs church. Granted 20 Dec. 1670. Copy from Heraldy, Boston, Feb. 6, 1808. Attested Jno. Coles, Senr. Herald Painter. Copied from the original copy by Mrs. Nannette Gardner, Detroit, Mich., July 1864. Attest Miles T. Gardner".

It is a simple "Record with Margin Line" sold by "Standard Bookkeeping Blanks". "14311, 13 5/8 x 8 1/4, 36 Lvs. Made in U.S.A.", that's basically all there is on the back of the record. There are eight pages at the end of the record that are blank. The 22 other pages have been written on the front side only; all the backs of the pages are blank. Both the front and back sides have the same rulings throughout the record.

The
italicized entries in this ancestor table below {a shortened version showing only my maternal GARDNER bloodline} are straight from the record book and the other, non-italicized entries are from my personal research and/or oral family history.
